Bernard Kirk Andrews Bernie has been involved in Studio art since 1976. He opened his first shop and studio in San Diego California and operated out of that location for fourteen years until returning to Toledo Ohio were he has continued his art for the last nineteen years working primarily in metal, stone, and glass. During his career, Bernie has had the pleasure of working with James Hubbell Artist and Architect (www.hubbellandhubbell.com). One of the major projects that he assisted James with was The Palace Doors of Abu Dhabi. This project involved extensive beveling in many of the pieces. While working with Hubbell, Bernie maintained his Pine Hills shop were he pursued works in stained, beveled, fused, and cast glass from 1979-1987. Upon returning to Toledo, Ohio in 1987, Bernie established Bernard Andrews Studios. During this time period Bernie volunteered numerous hours at the old mill in Providence, Ohio were he helped develop a Blacksmith’s shop. The Mill has since become part of the Lucas County Metro Parks System. In addition to his volunteer work, Bernie worked at Schmidt Studio assisting Jack Schmidt who is a master artist working in the mixed media of stainless steel, cast crystal, and stone components. During this time Bernie also assisted Shawn Messenger for several years producing a wide verity of blown objects, paperweights, and sculptures. All during these experiences Bernie continued to work in and develop his East Toledo studio executing a wide variety of commissions for churches, business, and private concerns. Some of the larger commissions are highlighted here:
Two large stained glass and beveled windows for B’Nai-Israel Temple Beveled window for Toledo Hospital Beveled and sand blast carved entry for the Oliver House, Maumee Bay Brewing Company Eastern Maumee Bay Business Awards 1st and 2nd editions A wall of honor for All Saints Church Rossford, Ohio. This is an 18’ by 8’ Vitrolite glass tile mural with over two hundred engraved names and dedications Medical Mission Hall of Fame Awards presented for outstanding humanitarian deeds in the medical field. This is an international award which has included a posthumous presentation to the Schweitzer Institute honoring Dr. Albert Schweitzer.
More recently Bernie has been working on a series of cast crystal horns, arches, and tiles. An additional area of interest is creating stacked laminated glass objects including a cubic sphere series which is a continuing subject of intrigue for him.
